This competition was first held in 1998, The children are between 12 and 15 years of age. In 2006 over 2000 children participated.
There are three levels: within their school, regional and the national final. The Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds sends information packs to the schools. The 70 children with the highest scores go on to the regional finals and all of them receive prizes such as Identification Guides. From the regional level the first 3 are chosen for the national finals. All of them win the chance to spend two days visiting a BSPB reserve, as well as information and educational materials.
Each stage has two parts, a written test of their knowledge of biology, ecology and conservation, and a practical test where they demonstrate their identification skills.
The purpose of the competition is to raise awareness of nature and conservation, to recruit new members and to involve teachers and schools in the work of the BSPB.
